Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis

The Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis is a national nonprofit dedicated to curing MS by determining its causes. MSNews is a free on-line resource provided by ACPMS for news and research updates and discussion relating to Multiple Sclerosis. It is like a daily newspaper of “what’s up in Multiple Sclerosis” with interactive letters to the editor attached to each story. The stories are found and submitted by staff, volunteers, and the readers themselves. Readers can comment on each story in a threaded discussion forum if they wish, or submit news stories or reports to share with others.

MSNews was previously using Slash (the code behind Slashdot) but that software no longer met their needs. I converted the site to Drupal. Some of the implementation tasks included:

  • A thorough Slash to Drupal data migration tool that preserved their existing users, stories, blogs, topics, and comments in Drupal, including forwarding all major incoming Slash-style URLs to the new Drupal URL containing the same content.
  • A new module, Persistent Login, that provides secure “Remember Me” login functionality.
  • Customization and deployment of the Notify and Subscriptions modules to provide a daily email newsletter of new content to users that opt-in.
  • A new Drupal theme to match their existing site design including several highly-customized Views displays.
